I'm starting lessons... now what?!?!
Taking private lessons is the best way to improve your skills as a musician. Being in a school ensemble is a great starting point, but most director's aren't able to give the individual attention needed in the classroom. We're so excited you've chosen to take this journey with me!

As a general rule here is what to expect and be prepared for:
- Bring a notebook - I will give you something to work on each week, and I will also take notes during your lessons so we remember what's been assigned.
- Practice! Depending on your level of study and goals, the amount of time you must spend each day practicing will vary. This is an ongoing discussion! Students that are not practicing or show a general lack of interest in committing may be asked to leave the studio.
- Music theory (in a nutshell the "math" of music) will be incorporated into most student's lessons.
- Performing is not required but is STRONGLY encouraged. The more you do it, the easier it gets! When opportunities arise to perform I will help you prepare for them and I will help you seek performance opportunities.
- You are expected to purchase the music used in lessons. Depending on your goals and commitment level we will work together to decide what is best for you. If there are financial concerns we can discuss this along the way. Please remember it is illegal to photocopy music without the publisher's permission.
- Am I too young? Too old? Probably not! I will let you know if there are concerns.
- Parents are welcome to observe lessons. However, know that some students work better without being observed, so occasionally I may request you to sit out.
- Regardless of how much or how little you are able to give, and whether you're just getting started as a youngster, coming back to music later in life, or are just picking it up on a whim, I'll be happy to have you as a part of our music family.
- You are not required to own an instrument, however, eventually it is the best route to purchase one. In the meantime you can rent or borrow from your school (if available). I can discuss these options with you and will be happy to give you personal recommendation for instruments. DO NOT PURCHASE AN INSTRUMENT WITHOUT THE GUIDANCE OF A TEACHER.
